“So Can I Really Make Money
With Option Trading?"
“Making Money with Option Trading?” That is a question I get asked a lot. I have been Trading Options for over a decade. I have bought Calls and Puts and I have sold Covered Calls and Naked Puts. I have traded Verticals, Diagonals, Calendars, Butterflies and Condors. Sometimes I put them on for a Debit (Spread) and sometimes they are put on for a Credit (Spread).
I have made money with all of these Option Trading Techniques. I have also lost money trading using these techniques as well as many others including trading Stocks and Futures Contracts.
I have personally witnessed the Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and unfortunately the “Oh my God, I just Blew Up my personal trading account." Through these personal trading experiences I have learned what works the best and why it works the best. I have also developed the skills necessary to know where to find the best trades and when to put them on.
I am constantly using the Internet for research and I have looked at a lot of trading related websites. For the most part they seem to fall into one of two different categories. Either they are general reference sites with a tremendous amount of information or they are slick sales sites touting the latest greatest super secret Holy Grail technique.
The problem with the first type of site is that while everything they say is generally true, they do not drill down and focus on what works best for the average person. Also, normally they just provide very general information and not the specific steps needed to select the best trades and how to manage them properly.
The second type of site has a host of problems. To begin with they provide very little information. They normally draw you in with great ad copy as they try to convince you that only they possess the secret ingredient needed to guarantee profits. Usually they provide very little information on their program without you first handing over your wallet.
Another problem with this second type is that many times their option trading strategy consists of one technique like Iron Condors. They will tell you how most option contracts expire worthless and how placing this type of trade virtually guarantees you a 5% to 15% monthly cash-flow.
It is true that most option contracts expire worthless and you can make 5% to 15% monthly on your capital 85% to 95% of the time. What they fail to mention is that the 5% to 15% of the time that the trade goes against you will result in wiping out six to eighteen months worth of gains.
In order to trade options successfully you need to know more than just how much money you are going to make if everything goes according to plan. You must also understand the strengths and weaknesses of each option position, what you stand to loose if the trade goes against you and how to create an Option Trading System that will allow you to make money over a wide range of market activity.
